WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. (KNSI) - Tragedy today in the small community of Mendota Heights as a 47 year old police officer was shot dead during a traffic stop around 12:20 Wednesday afternoon.
Mendota Heights Police say 19 year veteran Scott Patrick was shot during what they are calling a routine stop just a few blocks into the city of West St. Paul. Mendota police chief Mike Aschenbrener says the suspect is 39 year old Brian Fitch Sr of the West and South St. Paul area. He is reported to be driving a green Pontiac Grand Am. Anyone with information can call crimestoppers. A reward is being offered.
Aschenbrener had worked with Patrick across his entire career and called him a dedicated police offcer and family man who absolutely adored his children. Patrick had been with the department since 1995.
West St Paul police are leading the investigation in conjunction with a number of agencies.
In the hours that followed the shooting a manhunt that covered multiple areas of West St. Paul and Mendota Heights ensued.. After surrounding and investigating multiple locations, members of the Mendota Heights police, West St Paul Police and State Patrol Troopers were involved in a pursuit with a supposed suspect. That suspect was taken into custody after he was forced off the road on 494 near Woodbury. It turned out that incident was NOT related to the shooting of officer Patrick.
