(KNSI) - The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says the closed investigative file regarding the Jacob Wetterling abduction will be released to the public on Thursday, September 20th.
Sheriff Don Gudmundson will hold a news conference at 10:06 that morning to go over the key elements of the case and the file will be released afterwards.
The release of the file is required by Minnesota law. Officials say limited redactions as allowed and required by law have been made.
A court order required that any FBI materials be returned to the agency.
The sheriff's office points out that any inquiries for FBI documents must be made to the FBI.
Patty and Jerry Wetterling sued to prevent the release of some of the files.
The family has since decided not to appeal a judge's order to release the files.
11-year-old Jacob's remains were found in a pasture in Paynesville in September of 2016, after authorities were led there by Danny Heinrich, who confessed to kidnapping and murdering Jacob.
