(KNSI) - One day after Willie and Gloria Scheel's grandson was given two life sentences for their murders, the people of Paynesville are remembering the well known couple.
KNSI News spoke with community members at the local diner, the Hill Top Restaurant.
One longtime resident says Willie was a pillar of the community.
"He was really involved in the senior center delivering food for years and years and years, I think for about 35 years he delivered meals on wheels."
Others talked about Willie and Gloria running a drive-in in the town of less than 2,500 people.
The couple also used to rent out roller skates to local kids at the roller rink for a only quarter.
One man said Willie was big into collector cars, and use to drive his teenage daughter, who was Ms. Paynesville, around in the town's parade in his famous pink Cadillac.
Another resident said he was shocked to hear in March about Gregory Allan Scheel murdering his grandparents, whom he was living with at the time.
"Being that they helped his grandson out, they bailed him out of jail and everything and this is what ended up happening, it was just shocking."
34-year-old Gregory Scheel from Paynesville will serve 60 years, before the possibility of parole.
