ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - The Tech Tigers, who are coming off an undefeated regular season, kick off their season against crosstown rival the Apollo Eagles.
The Tigers lost three year starting quarterback Chris Backes, now playing for St. John's University.
This will be the first game that sophomore Nate Trewick will be targeting Tech wide receivers for touchdown passes.
"I mean we've been really been working on timing especially, our timing is huge, especially with Trewick coming in, this is his is first year starting so we're really working on our timing with him," Trent Meyer, senior wide receiver said.
Coach Greg Martig says he's been impressed with his teams' work in the offseason, but this will be the first time some of his underclassmen see game action at the varsity level.
"Our younger guys what you're hoping is that you know for the first time under the bright lights that things don't move to fast for them," Martig said.
There are plenty of returning starters from last year's team, like 6 foot 7 wide receiver and University of Minnesota commit Brevyn Spann-Ford.
"I think for the experienced guys, I think it's actually slow down and don't try and do too much, just let the game come and take the opportunities when they're there," Martig said.
Senior defensive back Brady Underwood is a part of a tough Tigers secondary who return three other seniors, Austin Brenner, Graham Nistler and two way standout James Kaczor.
Underwood is excited to start the season off with a rivalry.
"It brings a lot of energy to the season, you got to start off right back to defend a town basically," he said.
You can hear the game on AM 1450/FM 103.3 KNSI starting at 6:45 p.m.
