(KNSI) - A Stearns County prosecutor will become the latest judge in Stearns County.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan have chosen Matthew Engelking as District Court Judge in Minnesota’s Seventh Judicial District in St. Cloud.

Engelking is a senior attorney in the Stearns County Attorney’s Office, where his caseload primarily consisted of child abuse, sexual assaults and jury trial experience.

Previously, Engelking was a criminal defense attorney at Engelking Law Office. He did pro bono work for the victims of domestic violence.

His community involvement includes the Central Minnesota Child Advocacy Center Steering & Administrative Committee, Stearns County Domestic Violence Partnership and Chair of the Child Trauma Task Force Subcommittee.

He received his B.A. from Evangel University and his J.D. from Regent University School of Law.

Engelking will be replacing the Honorable Frederick L. Grunke, who is retiring.

He was chosen over Benton County Assistant Attorney Karl Schmidt and Hennepin County Senior Assistant Attorney Tara Ferguson Lopez.

Minnesota’s Seventh Judicial District consists of Becker, Benton, Clay, Douglas, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Otter Tail, Stearns, Todd, and Wadena Counties.
