(KNSI) - A St. Cloud man had to be rescued after the ATV he was driving broke through thin ice on Briggs Lake near Clear Lake.
The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office says 54-year-old Keith Allan Sand ended up in the frozen lake around 1:30 Monday afternoon. He wasn't hurt.
Sand was able to get himself out of the water.
Sherburne County’s hovercraft was used to get Sand’s ice fishing gear, which was floating on open water.
The sheriff's office says residents need to be extra cautious when deciding whether to bring vehicles out on area lakes and no ice is 100 percent safe.
The Minnesota DNR recommends there be at least four inches of ice for foot traffic on lakes, five inches for snowmobile or ATV traffic and 8-12 inches of ice for cars or small pickups trucks.
