(KNSI) - The St. Cloud City Council last night voted unanimously to install electric vehicle charging stations in town.
Public Services Director Pat Shea says the stations will come at no cost to the city. The money to build the four space charging station will come from a legal settlement between the state of Minnesota and Volkswagen.
"They've issued grants to a private company to install these. There will be some time and labor. We'll have to stripe the spots, we'll have to mark the spots and that sort of thing, so, it will be on city inventory parking spots, so anything over and above normal maintenance will be at the responsibility of the private company.
Customers who use the stations will have to pay for the electricity themselves.
There are several charging station locations up for discussion along Highway 10 and Interstate 94.
Council Member Dave Masters says he's happy about the move and is glad that St. Cloud is getting the charging stations as the market for electric vehicles increases.
