(KNSI) - A local elementary school's robotics team is gearing up for the state tournament.

Ryan Nguyen is 5th grader on Westwood Elementary's VEX Robotics team and says he was very excited when he learned he and his teammates were going to state in their inaugural season.

"That moment was kind of really shocking and happy at the same time because this is our first year and we already made it to state," Nguyen said.

Steve Tax is the coach of Westwood Elementary's VEX Robotics team and says the kids are gaining some serious problem solving skills.

"To see them use trial and error and the engineering process to come up with making the robot that works best in this game. I think they're just using those skills and their perseverance to make that happen, which is really cool to see," Tax said.

The students have a certain period of time to control their robot to move objects into the scoring zone.

The state tournament gets underway in February at the River's Edge Convention Center.
