(KNSI) - A man is accused of stealing a vehicle from a parking lot in Sartell and then calling the owner for help when it wouldn't start.
According to the criminal complaint, Edward Leroy Wilson got into a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee while it was warming up in the Walmart parking on County Road 120 Monday night.
The owner had started the SUV with her remote start while she was inside Walmart.
A couple hours later the vehicle’s owner says she got a phone call from a man, later identified as Wilson, claiming he was from an auto glass company and had taken the SUV and just completed work on it.
Investigators say the 37-year-old parked the Grand Cherokee at 585 Poplar Avenue in Isle and it wouldn’t start.
The Sauk Centre man then allegedly asked the victim to call someone to get the vehicle running so he could bring it back to her.
Police responded and say they found the SUV and Wilson in an apartment parking lot.
According to the criminal complaint, Wilson told police he was with Safelite Auto Glass and was trying to return the vehicle to its owner.
Investigators say when Wilson was told the SUV was stolen he admitted to taking the vehicle.
Police say surveillance video shows Wilson getting in the vehicle and driving away.
He’s been charged with theft of a motor vehicle. Bond was set at $25,000. His next court date is set for April 16th.
