(KNSI) - A repeat drunk driver is accused of leading police on a chase in a stolen vehicle through a St. Cloud neighborhood on his birthday.
Around 10 o'clock on Thursday night, police say they tried to pull over a gray Jeep Compass on 10th Avenue South for driving erratically and at a high rate of speed.
The officer followed the vehicle into Go For It Gas on the corner of 9th Avenue South and University Drive South and activated his lights.
Police say the vehicle left at a high rate of speed down University Drive, turned into a residential area and blew through three stop signs at 60 miles per hour.
During the chace officers learned the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Sauk Rapids earlier in the night.
According to the criminal complaint, police attempted to perform a PIT maneuver when the vehicle went over a sidewalk, through a yard and ran into a squad car.
Police say the suspect, identified as Christopher Lendell Johnson, tried to flee the scene. An officer used a taser on Johnson and arrested him.
Investigators say they could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the Sauk Rapids man.
According to the complaint, the 40-year-old refused to give a breath test, blood draw or a urine sample to see how much alcohol was in his system.
He’s been charged with DWI test refusal, theft of a motor vehicle and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, all felonies.
Johnson's bail was set at $100,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 13th.
Investigators say Johnson had his driver’s license canceled because of DWI convictions in March 2011, December 2014 and in February.
Thursday was Johnson’s 40th birthday.
