(KNSI) - Gregory Allen Scheel was sentenced to life in prison on two counts of first degree murder, for killing his grandparents.
The 34-year-old man from Paynesville will serve 60 years, before the possibility of parole.
Family members and friends of Willie and Gloria Scheel gave very emotional statements in court Thursday morning.
One family member said she won't to get the chance to bake with grandma again or watch videos with grandpa.
A neighbor of Willie, 93, and Gloria, 80, said the entire town of Paynesville loved them and Scheel took that love away from them.
Scheel kept his head down and cried for almost the entire sentencing hearing.
According to the criminal complaint, Willie had his arms and legs bound and had a plastic bag over his head, while Gloria had an electrical cord around her neck.
Scheel blamed the strangling and asphyxiation deaths of Willie and Gloria on being under a meth-induced phsycosis.
Judge Mary Mahler didn't buy that statement though, saying the facts of the case and the actions he took showed he wasn't, in her mind, under a drug induced psychosis.
