(KNSI) - A Paynesville man made his first court appearance since being charged with killing his daughter.
John Sean Newport appeared in a wheelchair on Monday afternoon for an initial hearing on a charge of 2nd-degree murder.
The 46-year-old didn't enter a plea. Newport's lawyer asked for an omnibus hearing at a later date. He waived his right to have the hearing within 42 days.
Newport's next court date wasn't immediately set.
At an omnibus hearing, both sides can argue over what evidence could be used if the case goes to trial.
At the end of the hearing, Newport looked over at his family in the courtroom and told them he loved them, and they responded that they love him too.
Investigators say Newport poured gasoline all over a Paynesville mobile home and lit it on fire after getting into a fight with his daughter over her wanting to move out.
According to the criminal complaint, the 22-year-old Jamey Newport was trapped in a bathroom and died from smoke inhalation.
Police say Newport posted threatening messages on Facebook just before the fire.
He remains in jail on a $2,000,000 bond.
