Hockey Day Rink Taking Shape

(KNSI) - As Hockey Day Minnesota gets closer, it's all hands on deck for City of St. Cloud staff getting the rink and everything else in place.
The pieces of the rink arrived from Texas on Monday, just under two weeks ahead of when the Granite City will host the celebration of all things Minnesota hockey on January 19 and 20.
The rink was being assembled Tuesday at Eastman Park overlooking Lake George.
City of St. Cloud Park Maintenance Supervisor, Chris Zabinski wants to get the rink flooded to help protect the refrigeration coils underneath the ice from Thursday's snow.
"We're pushing to try to get ahead of the weather, it's much easier to clean up if we have ice down, so that when the snow comes it's on top of the ice and not inside these coils, then we'd have to get it out of the coils."
Zabinski says they are ahead of schedule but there is a lot of work still to be done.
"The bleachers need to be set in place, there's what's called a festoon (tent), for food and activities that are going to be happening over in the market area from Summertime by George."
He says his staff is enjoying the chance to be a part of such a unique event coming to town.
"We're all very excited about it, it's a big deal, this doesn't happen everyday, it's something very different and unique, and we probably won't get a chance to be involved in it again, so it's a lot of fun."
If all goes to plan everything will be ready to go next Wednesday.
The puck will drop on the festivities Friday, January 19, in a girl's high school game between the St. Cloud Icebreakers and the Sartell-Sauk Rapids Storm'n Sabres.
On Saturday at 10 a.m., St. Cloud will take on St. Cloud Cathedral in a boy's matchup.
Both of those games will be broadcast live on KNSI.
