(KNSI) - St. Cloud based Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota is looking for people to take a young person under their wing.
January is National Mentoring Month and the organization hopes to get 100 volunteer mentors for kids ages 5 through 16. Mentors can be whole families, couples or individuals.
Rachel Johnson with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota says being a mentor is easier than you might think.
"It's really just inviting them on what you’re already doing, if you are volunteering somewhere else, if you have a family event, if you just want to go do something fun."
She says a mentor can make all the difference in the world to a child.
"We're not focused on tutoring or anything like that, we are hoping that their academics do grow but what we are focusing on is friendship. It's a domino effect, if you invest in their life, if you spend time with them, if you let them know that they're important other things will change in their life."
Volunteers are paired with a child for four hours a month for a year.
Big Brother Big Sisters matches kids based on interest and hobbies with a mentor.
