(KNSI) - The 2018 Minnesota Governor's Fishing Opener is in the Willmar lakes Area including lakes in Spicer and New London.

Spicer's Green Lake is this year's epicenter for the Minnesota tradition.

Governor Dayton kept his send off speech short because he said he wanted to get out and fish, he thanked the Willmar lakes area and his hosts at Green Lake.

KNSI's Bob Hughes and Jake Judd broadcasted out on the water during the opener.

Bob's boat had a little better luck landing fish than Jake's, but neither could land a walleye.

Green Lake had 29 inches of ice just a week or so ago, but thanks to some warm weather the ice finally melted on May 3.

Since the ice out was so late, that left some cold water temperatures.

Anglers concentrated their efforts during the early morning hours in the shallows and near moving water, where more fish could be found in those warmer waters.
