Bike Racks Installed In Downtown

(KNSI) - A network of new bike racks are being installed in downtown St. Cloud to encourage people who work, shop and visit to bike.
The 22 racks are being installed this month and next in 15 different locations, primarily along St. Germain Street.
Stearns County Public Health Coordinator Allison Dudek says the first racks were installed last week and it didn't take long for people to find them.
"We posted a few pictures on Facebook and people were commenting that they've already used them so, they were used immediately, which is pretty exciting. It shows there was a great need for new or better bike parking."
She says they hope to add more bike racks in other parts of the city and throughout the metro area in the future.
The new racks will be left up all year long, even in the winter.
Kurt Franke says he takes his bike everywhere and is glad the bike racks are going up.
"I used to chain my bike to that garbage can right there, well, this us way better."
The bike racks are part of the ongoing efforts of Bike St. Cloud and are being funded through the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership, which is administered locally by the Public Health Divisions of Benton, Sherburne and Stearns Counties.
St. Cloud Public Works is installing the racks.
All the racks should be in by May 13th for National Bike to Work Week.
In 2018, St. Cloud was honored as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.
