(KNSI) - The Jolly Trolley hit the streets of St. Cloud for the 9th annual Jolly Trolley food drive.
The Jolly Trolley is a mobile food drive that travels to a different local grocery store each night to collect donations using one of the Metro Bus vehicles.
"We feel it's a way to give back to the community with one of the biggest needs people have, its such a basic need to have food on the table... So, it's really just a way to give back to our passengers and community at large," said Nate Ramacher, marketing manager of Metro Bus.
The Jolly Trolley donates to three local food shelves: St. Cloud Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and the Promise Neighborhood.
"We usually fill up the whole back end of the bus, stocked full of food, and then we go on Monday to disperse it to the three food shelves."
Since 2011, the Jolly Trolley has collected nearly 30,000 pounds of food and $18,000.
"Last year, we collected over $2500 and over 2500 pounds of food, so it was a good year. We're hoping to beat that this year."
Non-perishable items and cash are accepted.
"Cash goes a long way because food shelves have 3 to 5 times as much buying power as our dollars do in the store."
The Jolly Trolley will be at a local grocery store from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. each night throughout the week.
Starting on Monday, December 2nd, the trolley is at Coborn's Cooper.
Tuesday, the location is Cash Wise East.
Wednesday is Lunds & Byerlys.
Thursday is Coborn's Sauk Rapids, and Friday is Coborn's in Sartell.
