High School Volleyball

Apollo High School opened up the varsity girl’s volleyball season Tuesday against the runners-up in the Section 8AAA tournament from a year ago. Alexandria swooped into town, picking up a 3-0 victory in a battle of the birds. The Eagles were competitive for the first half of Set One. Apollo was down 13-8 when Alex rattled off over 20 consecutive points, the visitors carrying their streak over into the middle frame as well.

The run set the tone for the match, which finished 8-25, 11-25, 10-25. Second year head coach Michaela Laudenbach has a young team. Starters Megan Gmach and Haley Jacobson are just sophomores. Setter Brook Grossinger and middle blocker Jordan Beckermann are juniors.

Willmar 3, Sauk Rapids-Rice 0 (17-25, 18-25, 17-25). The Cardinals were playing their third match of the season, while the Storm competed in their first. Sauk Rapids-Rice returns middle blocker Lexi Helmin from a state tournament squad a year ago in Class AAA. Joining several new faces in the starting lineup is head coach Gail Bialke, who replaces Karen Beckmann. Bialke was an assistant the past several seasons.

Avery Templin, Shayla Nordlund, and Grace Schulte were stout defensively for Sartell, all recording at least 17 digs in the five-set match, according to head coach Riley Marod.
