(KNSI) — An investigation is underway after a suspect and police allegedly exchanged gunfire during a chase on a highway in the southwest metro.

According to police, on Tuesday night, they were in pursuit of an SUV on Highway 41 south of Highway 5 in Chanhassen when the woman behind the wheel pointed a gun in their direction. Initial reports allege she did start shooting. One officer fired back, and they used a pursuit intervention technique, or PIT maneuver, to get her to stop just before driving into a busy intersection. She appeared to lose control of the SUV, drive onto the shoulder of oncoming traffic and rollover.

No officers were hurt.

The woman remained in the car, reportedly refusing to come out, and SWAT negotiators responded to work on getting her to surrender.

Four hours later, she was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Carver County jail, where she is awaiting formal charges.
