(KNSI) – “Think summer!” is more than just a motivational slogan on this wintry March day.

It’s necessary if you want to lock in the perfect camping getaway, according to Minnesota DNR Parks and Trails Division Information Officer Sara Berhow. “Camping reservations for state parks can be made up to 120 days in advance. And 120 days from today, which means a good chunk of that summer is already in that reservation window.”

Berhow says many of the most popular spots book fast, especially if you are looking to do a Friday or Saturday night. She specifically mentions parks along the North Shore, between Duluth and Grand Portage. She also reminds you that you will need a vehicle pass, either $7 for a daily permit or $35 for an annual sticker. A link to make your reservations is here.

Additionally, registration for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ I Can! programs is less than a week away. It opens on April 1st. Berhow says the experiences are designed to make various outdoor activities more accessible and teach the basics.

“It’s a great chance for people who want to try something new that they haven’t done before to do it in a spot where there’s somebody to give them instructions and help them get started and all the equipment’s provided. So, somebody can try camping or fishing or mountain biking, canoeing, even sea kayaking.”

Classes are free or low-cost. They are designed for both individuals and families. A link for more information on the various I Can! programs offered each summer is here.
