(KNSI) – Purify yourself in the waters of Middle Spunk Lake during the 17th annual Central Minnesota Polar Plunge.

The dive into the chilly lake off Avon Beach is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Special Olympics of Central Minnesota. It’s a partnership between the organization, local businesses, and law enforcement. Stearns County Sheriff Steve Soyka has experienced the icy water firsthand. “I am not intending to jump this year, last year was my first time. And even though you’ve braced your mind for the cold water, it’s mighty cold.”

Deputies, Avon Police, and the Avon Fire Department provide security at the event, help set up and tear down, and are encouraged to volunteer.

Soyka says it’s a really easy way to make a difference. “Register and then you just start telling people. Find your friends and coworkers and tell them your jumping and ask them to sponsor you. Any amount of money will help. And that’s the biggest way to raise funds.”

You can jump on your own or join a team with your spouse, friends, or coworkers. The event is February 17th at noon at the Fisher’s Club next to the beach.

In 2023, more than 300 jumpers brought in over $86,600. The local polar plunge has raised $1,195,000 since its inception.

Along with the polar plunge, local law enforcement has supported Special Olympics with the Tip a Cop night at Texas Roadhouse and the Torch Run.
