(KNSI) – For the first time since 1970, there is a new king salmon.

A September charter fishing trip on Lake Superior netted a 10-pound, 14-ounce coho. Wildlife officials this week recognized it as a new state record. Coho salmon are also known as silver salmon and are typically much smaller. They average between 1.5 and three pounds in Minnesota.

Coho salmon are considered one of the best-tasting species. They boast a rich, reddish-orange meat. No word if the record catch turned into a meal or two.

The trip occurred on September 4th. David Cichosz says, “Once the fish broke the surface, I could tell by our captain’s response that we had a big fish.”
