(KNSI) – Saturday morning is the annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk, providing light and support for those dealing with the fallout from suicide.

Organizer Deni Jo Ballanger says it will help people connect in the toughest of situations. “I’m going to have a short program at 11:00, and then we’ll do the walk. There’s going to be many activities there. We’re going to have a memorial wall, we have our signature honor beads. We’re going to have other organizations that are tabling the event with resources. We’re going to have live music. It’s just a place for people to come together.”

Registration is available same-day at 10:00 a.m., or you can do so online right now. A link is here. It will take place at Lake George in St. Cloud. Proceeds raised benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The local chapter is above its goal for the year. Ballanger says, “To be honest, we’ve already surpassed our first goal, which is amazing. And so, I have increased the goal, and if I feel we need to increase it again, we certainly will!”

The central Minnesota event has collected over $18,000 as of Thursday afternoon.

Ballanger is in her second year overseeing the walk at Lake George. She wants to grow it throughout her tenure.

New this year is a memorial wall for those lost to suicide and mental health problems. Participants are encouraged to bring a picture to add to it.
