(KNSI) – Your artwork could fly just below Old Glory at every public building in the state.

Minnesota is looking into redesigning its flag and state seal and is taking submissions of original artwork to become the new state emblem. Entries must be added to the online portal or postmarked in the mail by October 30th. More information is here.

The redesign commission was established this year by the state legislature. It has until January 1st to make a recommendation. The Minnesota Historical Society is providing support for the State Emblems Redesign Commission.

The seal and flag both go back to the 1800s, and in 1957, the backdrop was changed to solid blue. Most of the imagery in Minnesota’s seal is consistent with other states in the region. A pioneer with a rifle is prominently featured in Michigan’s coat of arms, and Wisconsin pays tribute to agriculture with a plow and farmer.

That has not stopped critics from calling Minnesota’s flag offensive. They now have a chance to create something that wins over seven of the commission’s 13 voting members. Four legislators are also seated on the commission. They cannot vote at this stage of the process but have the authority to give input.
