(KNSI) – United States District Attorney Mac Schneider says St. Cloud-native Deanna Gerads appeared in federal court Thursday in Houston.

She will be transported to North Dakota to face charges for importing and distributing cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. Gerads is 33 years old and had been hiding from authorities in Mexico before being arrested on Tuesday.

Gerads’ case is being investigated by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Internal Revenue Service, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, and Stearns Sheriff’s Offices, St. Cloud and Sartell Police Departments, plus the Fargo and West Fargo Police Departments.

The case is part of Operation Unfinished Business II, which focused on international drug trafficking. Gerads is accused of working for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s Sinaloa cartel in a group led by Macalla Lee Knott. Officials say they seized 150 pounds of methamphetamine, nine pounds of fentanyl powder, and 120,000 fentanyl pills destined for Minnesota and North Dakota.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher C. Myers and Alex Stock will lead the prosecution in Fargo.
