(KNSI) – For kids hitching a ride this summer, they can avoid ending up like the old Vanity Fare song. There’s a free option locally that doesn’t involve a thumb up on the side of the road in the pouring rain.

Metro Bus says its U-Go Free Summer Youth Program allows riders 17 years old or younger to ride as much as they want in June, July, and August at no charge.

There are online tutorials on proper etiquette while riding the bus, learning how to read a map of the system, and transferring from one route to another. The video vault can be accessed here. The program applies only to Fixed Route buses.

It’s free to all children in St. Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, and Waite Park. Metro Bus says there are several kid-friendly destinations on its routes, including the Boys and Girls Clubs, the library, movie theaters, splash pads, shopping centers, and the YMCA.
