(KNSI) – Wright County was hardest hit by drought conditions in 2022 and, even a week ago 70% of the county was considered abnormally dry.

The most recent winter storm has wiped that away. Now only 1.5% of Wright County is considered abnormally dry, along with less than one percent of Stearns County. The rest of central Minnesota is reporting normal soil moisture. It is the best readings for the area since an extremely wet spring nearly a year ago.

The measurements were taken early Tuesday morning. Since then, another snowstorm dropped at least three inches across the area. More wintry precipitation is expected starting Sunday.

According to historical data maintained by St. Cloud State University, the city has seen three snowstorms this season that register in the top 25 for greatest all-time. Records date back to 1893. In some places, we’ve already reached a seasonal record for total snowfall. The impressive storms have blanketed the ground from here to the Twin Cities.

Three months ago, nearly 90% of Wright County was in at least a moderate drought. Over a third was dealing with severe drought. The county’s prospects are much improved as spring arrives.
