(KNSI) – Palmer Bus Financial Management and Trobec’s Bus Service, which both work with local school districts, have been awarded grants from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

They will get over $507,000 in total for stop arm cameras. The equipment will soon be installed on 170 buses between the two companies. The money is part of a fourth round of grants from DPS, which focuses on enforcement and education for drivers about how to react to the various signals school buses use on their routes. Nearly 1,000 Minnesotans are cited each year for stop arm violations.

DPS Office of Traffic Safety Director Mike Hanson says each infraction is important because of how serious the potential consequences are. “Driving distracted or thinking you can quickly drive around a bus could kill or seriously injure a child. What a horrific, easily preventable consequence. Drive smart and help keep our youngest Minnesotans safe.”

Palmer works with districts in Stearns and Sherburne Counties as well as a host of others across the state. It is receiving $306,453.72 to equip 103 buses. Trobec’s Bus Service has been earmarked $200,988.03 for 67 buses. Palmer and Trobec’s were the biggest beneficiaries for this round.
