(KNSI) – There’s still time to dust off the garage workbench and create an entry for the Pantown Derby.

One of the highlights of being a Boy Scout, you may remember putting in hours perfecting your entry for your troop’s pinewood derby. Now you have the chance to continue the tradition as an adult. The event is Monday with registration beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Pantown Brewing Company in St. Cloud.

Council Development Director Paul Ravenberg says there is still time to make your own car, but you don’t need to in order to take part in the races.

“We have car kits available. There’s still a little bit of time to build the car yet before Monday, but the other options are if you happen to have one sitting around that maybe your kid had built or you still have one from your days as a scout, you can certainly enter that one as well. And we have a rental car program too.”

Ravenberg gives some tips if you want to be fastest down the track.

“Most of it seems to be how well you get the wheels set up. My son, he built six different Pinewood Derby cars over his Cub Scout career and, it’s funny, the one that seemed the least aerodynamic did the best.”

He says there will also be a prize given for the most creative.

The track is timed electronically, which eliminates the need for a photo finish. To build your car and enter it, the cost is $25. Spectators get in for just $15 and it includes food. Renting a car costs $10. Entry forms and car kits are available at Pantown Brewing Company.

All proceeds go to scouting programs in the St. Cloud area, including winter camping near Brainerd.
