(KNSI) – The Sartell Police Department is telling drivers to stop going around school buses.

Officers have started directing traffic along Pinecone Road in the morning to help lessen traffic delays near school zones. As a reminder, the SPD says it is against the law to pass a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Drivers must stop 20 feet away from the bus in both directions. Passing a bus on the right when displaying the prewarning flashers (yellow) or red lights is illegal.

Bus drivers will report violators to the police. Officers say obeying the laws promotes safety for children and gives parents peace of mind knowing their child is safe when going to and from school.

The only time there is an exception to the school bus stop arm law is on a separated roadway. Most residential roads in Sartell and most of Pinecone Road does not qualify as a divided roadway.
