(KNSI) – Drivers are urged to be cautious if they intend to be on the streets Tuesday during trick-or-treat hours.

The Wright County Sheriff’s Office says to watch for kids darting into the road and try to anticipate any potential problems before they happen. Drive slowly and do not pass any stopped vehicles. With the cold weather, another driver could be dropping off kids as close to the front door as possible.

When trick-or-treaters look to be in the younger age range, always yield to them. They may not know how to cross the street properly. Also, it recommends avoiding any distractions, especially on your cell phone.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office shared tips for those walking about on Halloween. It says to remember that you have a costume on, which may be dark or hard to pick up for drivers. If you are crossing the street, let cars slow down for you to signal that they can see you.

Only use the street when absolutely necessary; otherwise, stay on paths and sidewalks as you crisscross neighborhoods. For parents acting as chaperones, don’t let younger children run ahead of the group or lag behind.

Lastly, the sheriff’s office says to make sure you dress for the weather. Low temperatures of about 20 degrees are expected.
