(KNSI) – A Kansas man died after he went swimming in Ruth Lake in Emily in Crow Wing County and drowned.

Just before 3 p.m. Monday, the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office says first responders were called to the scene where authorities say an unconscious man had been pulled from the water by nearby boaters. The office says the man, 66-year-old Edward Rando of Towanda, Kansas, had been swimming when he became distressed, and people attempted to get flotation devices to him. Then, nearby boaters helped get Rando, who had become unconscious, out of the water.

The sheriff’s office says life-saving efforts were attempted on Rando, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office listed Rando’s apparent cause of death as drowning.
