BEMIDJI, Minn. (KNSI) Authorities in Beltrami County say a Bemidji man has died after being shot while hunting on public land.

The sheriff's office says it received a call Saturday at 9 a.m. that a deer hunter had been shot by another hunter in Turtle River Township, about nine miles northeast of Bemidji.

Rescue officials found 66 year-old Don Bixby dead at the scene.

Authorities say the shooter was a Bemidji man who knew Bixby but wasn't hunting with him.

The shooter was released pending an investigation. The sheriff's office says an autopsy is pending.
